Ruta de Picasso

The Route of Picasso

Pablo Picasso was like a sponge from a very early age. Absorbing everything around him from every day life objects to other works of art, all fueling his inspiration to create his own pieces of art. he used many mediums in his work, charcoal to oils. Discovering the steps he took in his life as an artist will take you into nocturnal adventures of joy and curiosity, into the cultural clashes that inspired and provoked him, along with the explosion of emotions and feelings with which he experimented with so many different painting techniques.

Barcelona of Picasso

The family travelled from Picasso’s birth place of Malaga to Barcelona. Picasso studied in Barcelona the traditional styles of painting but soon rebelled against the traditionalist and realistic style of painting. With his father, a teacher of art, he studied at the Llotja. Art was a way of life for Picasso, his hunger to learn and all things new, lead him to follow the Bohemian way that was coming from Paris at that time. You will see pictures of this time in the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

Horta de Sant Joan

The techniques that made up the realistic art of the time, was surpassed quickly like small steps by a restless teenage Pablo Picasso.

With his eagerness to discover the world, he experimented with every style of painting and opened himself up to any and every possibility, a fact that led him to form a close relationship with Manual Palleres, a fellow classmate who was five years older than Pablo.

The two artists soon became inseperable friends, so much so that with the outbreak of the Cuban War and the possibility of recruitment of Manel Pallarés into the army and with Pablo playing truant from his studies at the Art College in Madrid, they both escaped to Horta de Sant Joan, the village where Manuel grew up.

Paris

The beautiful and inspiring city of Paris was an obligatory stop for the two young protagonists. They time in rural Catalonia filled them with new ideas and motivation, with their immersion into everything Mother Nature had to offer had inspired them to experiment with all that was close to them.

Their curiosity about the world had been aroused so much that they both decided to head straight to the great city of creativity and discovery, to the bohemian, elegant and provocative country that dared to welcome artists, styles and arts from all over the world.
Pablo was first to arrive, Manual arrived later. There Pablo was ready to be a sponge again. There, he would begin to become the Picasso, we now know today.

After the severe criticism from Matisse about the “Damas of Avignon”, Picasso got Sponsored from Gertrude Stein (The Art Dealer who also sponsored Matisse.!) She saw the potential and commissioned him to paint as many pictures as he could in the new style. He decided to abandon Paris and return to Horta, the quiet place where he was able to develop this style. He proceeded to paint more than 30 pictures.

He returned to Paris with all the pictures he had painted and handed them to Gertrude Stein. She then proceeded to sell them. Nowadays they are displayed all around the world. One of the best displays of Picasso art can be found in the MoMA in NY.

The landscape pictures he produced In Horta in 1909 were critical to the development of the early Cubist style, in which the subjects are rendered from multiple geometric shapes. In The Reservoir, Pablo used interlocking planes to fuse the land;s rugged topography with the terracotta and stucco architecture of the village.

Regarding this period of creation, MoMA exibits 4 relevant pictures created in Horta: Still life with liqueur, The mill, Woman with pears and The reservoire.
